Hi! I too downloaded the book as a PDF and am only a quarter of the way through it. I kind of cracked up at your description of her videos for a few reasons. I find her voice very calming so I tend to get more out of what she’s saying. The hands don’t bother me. However, I’m not a fan of the hands camera view in general. I’ve watched some men do the same things with very weird looking hands and/or thumbs and I find it very distracting. lol. I did think it a bit ironic that she advocates not using tables, then fills the back of the book with tables, maybe to cater to all? Over all though I like the book so far. It was interesting to read your take on it. Thank you! I subscribed!

Thanks for your comment, and welcome aboard :)

Don't get me wrong: the front half of the book is really quite good, and there are some really excellent ideas in it. I don't necessarily believe in all of them, but I can appreciate where she's coming from.

For me though, the abrupt appearance of the epilogue literally halfway through the book caused me such a WTF? moment that it's hard to get past.

I hear u! It will be interesting to see that part. I’m new to solo gaming and have been a DM/player for about 5 years now. So trying to soak in the solo stuff. It was just funny how you mentioned the hands and I was just telling a friend the same thing over the weekend. But about guy’s hands. I just can’t watch some of them and will listen only.

Solo gaming helped bring me back into the hobby. I started gaming forty years ago this year (yeah, I'm old), and I had an eight year break starting in 2014. I thought I was done with gaming for good. But Free League started publishing too many damn good games, and I couldn't stay away :)

But solo gaming has let me play the way the sort of game I like, without having to worry about whether everyone else is enjoying it or not. I'll admit that the things I value most highly in games are things that don't even appear on most people's gaming radars.

Hey I’m old too! Never played games like DnD as a kid cuz you know, Mom, magic, demons oh my so I wasn’t allowed to play. Then life and one day I wanted my nephews to play something other than video games. I taught myself DnD and then taught them. Now I’m expanding! 😊😊 can I ask what solo games you like the most?

I ran into the same issue with D&D as a kid. When I first came across it in '82, my mum was in her rabid Christian phase, and took one look at the front of the Moldvay basic set box and said "There's no way you're ever going to get that!"

A couple of years later, I started playing myself, and the group of friends I had mainly played Traveller. So I asked for the Starter Edition set for my birthday, and because it had astronauts and spaceships, that was OK, and they got it for me :)

That was my gateway drug. Now I own a stupidly large number of gaming systems (somewhere above 150, and not one of them is D&D :) ).

As for what solo games I like the most? I actually don't look at it like that. I have games that I like (this substack has focused on my game of The Electric State from Free League), and I use a solo engine to drive it. With the exception of Ironsworn and Ironsworn: Starforged, I haven't found a game designed as a solo game that I like (I bounced hard off things like The Thousand Year Old Vampire, for example).

Right now, my preferred engine is Mythic Game Master Emulator, 2nd Edition. I have a bunch of different game systems I want to use Mythic with.

But I also have a bunch of the GameMaster's Apprentice card decks which I am quite fond of. I also would love to take another go at Ironsworn: Starforged and see if I can get that going nicely.

I’ve been rotating between Hostile Solo, Ker Nethalas, Four Against Darkness and Walking Dead RPG. I try not to journal too much because I want to play the games but inevitably I get into a lot of journaling! I’ve been eyeing Ironsworn, Starforged and Shadowdark for the future. I’ve noticed that Hostile mentions Traveller and the Cepheus system a lot. I have played 1000 year old Vampire and wow, I wrote a book! lol
